The blaze broke out in the Town of Fairfield around 5:10 a.m., Tuesday, May 3 at the home located at 577 Kings Highway East.
Fairfield firefighters responded to the fire after receiving a call from a passerby reporting smoke and fire coming from the house, said Assistant Chief Roger Caisse, of the Fairfield Fire Department.
First arriving units arrived within four minutes and reported fire coming from the first floor of the home, Caisse said.
While firefighters were attacking the fire and conducting a search of the home, they found a man on the first floor who was removed to safety for advanced life support from an AMR ambulance crew, the chief added.
The man was transported to Bridgeport Hospital, his condition is unknown at this time.
In all, 28 firefighters responded to the scene including mutual aid from Bridgeport and Westport fire departments.
“The notification of fire by a passer-by contributed to the rapid response, rescue, and extinguishment of this fire,” Caisse said.
He reminded residents to “Close before you doze” which involves closing all doors in the home before sleep as this can help create a barrier against deadly levels of toxic carbon monoxide, smoke, and flames, and potentially save someone’s life.
The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes after arrival, Caisse said.
Fire damage to the residence is estimated to be over $250,000.00.
The was uninhabitable due to heavy smoke damage throughout and fire damage to the first floor, officials said.
Fire Marshal Phil Higgins is investigating the cause of the fire.
